Tony’s Chocolonely Offers ‘Slave-Free’ Chocolate Bars To Support Cocoa Farm Workers

Tony’s Chocolonely offers a variety of chocolate bars that are produced with 100 percent slave-free chocolate, helping to address inequality in the global chocolate industry. The Amsterdam, Netherlands based company invests in agricultural knowledge and training to help improve cocoa farmers’ productivity. All cocoa beans are purchased directly from the company’s partner cooperatives in Ghana and the Ivory Coast, and are fully traceable, the company notes on its website.

More than 9.6 percent of the product’s retail price is paid to the cocoa farmers, according to the company. The company pays a premium to farmers to reduce their expenses by allowing them to purchase fertilizer in bulk, install water pumps and make education more available.

The products are available to vending operators and retailers in the U.S. through foodservice distributors such as United Natural Foods Inc., KeHE Distributors LLC, Chex Finer Foods, Inc., Crown Pacific Fine Foods and Paradigm Foodworks.

The 6-ounce big bars include milk chocolate, dark almond sea salt, dark milk pretzel toffee, dark pecan coconut, milk caramel sea salt, milk hazelnut and extra dark chocolate. The limited edition offerings include 6.35-ounce bars including blonde chocolate caramelized pecan, dark chocolate cookie caramel and milk chocolate shortbread caramel.

The 1.8-ounce small bars include milk chocolate, extra dark chocolate, dark almond sea salt and milk caramel sea salt.

There are also seasonal offerings, such as 6.35-ounce milk chocolate with mulled wine.

The company’s U.S. operation is based in Portland, Ore., according to Meredith McEntee, people and culture champion.
