As vending operators continue expanding into micro markets, familiar brands and grab-and-go convenience are helping drive snack sales, according to McKee Foods.

During a recent interview with Vending Connection, Roger Olmstead, a McKee Foods veteran with more than 30 years at the company, said the shift from traditional vending to micro markets has changed how consumers shop for snacks. Unlike a vending machine, shoppers can pick up products, read the packaging and compare options before making a purchase.

“The consumer is able to actually touch the product,” Olmstead said. “When they can pick something up, look at it and turn it around, that really adds to sales.”

Olmstead said trusted brands continue to have an advantage in unattended retail because consumers already recognize them from grocery stores. Whether they’re grabbing a snack at work, in a hotel or while traveling, familiar products often become an easy choice.

Founded in 1934, McKee Foods has built its reputation on brands including Oatmeal Cream Pies, Nutty Buddy Bars, Zebra Cakes, Cosmic Brownies and Nutty Buddy Bars. For vending and micro markets, the company focuses on its best-selling products to help operators maximize inventory turns and keep popular items in stock.

McKee Foods distributes nationally through partners including Dot Foods, Vistar and regional vending distributors, with direct purchasing also available for larger operators. The company is also preparing to introduce several new products, including a Strawberry Shortcake Roll, Chocolate Old-Fashioned Donut and a protein bar.

After more than 90 years in business, McKee Foods continues to adapt alongside the unattended retail industry while focusing on the familiar brands consumers continue to reach for.
