Avalanche Granola Bars Ride Micro Markets’ Growth

The expanding popularity of micro markets has given a boost to Avalanche Swiss Granola bars, which offer all natural, non-GMO ingredients packed in 2-ounce bags with whole grains, oats, dried fruit and sweet spices.

“A lot of the bigger tech companies are really grasping on to this product because they are looking for better-for-you items,” said Brian Reff, national sales manager at Shelton, Conn. based International Marketing Systems, which manufactures and markets the granola bars, which are organic, kosher and vegetarian.

With a suggested $2.49 retail price, the product has been a strong seller in all the nearly 10,000 micro markets that are presently offering it, he said.

International Marketing Systems, which manages sales for a number of convenience and foodservice brands, including Arizona Ice Tea and Bigelow Tea, developed the Avalanche granola bar line to help convenience service operators meet the growing demand for healthy snacks, Reff said.

“If you look at away-from-home snacking, a lot of it was filled with processed foods,” he said.

“It (Avalanche) has a longer shelf life, but it keeps the crunchiness and the crispiness of the granola, and offered in something that either one, people can just pour milk right into the bag when you open it up, or two, if you’re buying a yogurt from the micro market, they can add some granola to it,” Reff said.

The production process preserves the product quality while allowing an 18-month shelf life, he said.

“The goal isn’t to get it too dry or let it not be dry enough so it can’t go into that packaging,” Reff said. “It’s a high, high quality product.”

“It’s a slow baked process, and it’s baked within five different temperature zones for 20 to 30 minutes,” he said. After it is baked, the product is nitrogen flushed in foil barrier pouches to protect it from oxygen and moisture to maintain the oven freshness and crunchiness at the moment of consumption.

The manufacturing facility in Sachseln, Switzerland collects solar and hydroelectric energy to power all its operations. The heat from baking the granola is collected to heat water throughout the production facility. Switzerland is a global leader in protecting its environmental health and natural resources.

Avalanche varieties include Swiss Granola Original, Swiss Granola with Raisins, Swiss Granola with Red Berries, and Swiss Granola with Coconut, Quinoa and Chocolate.

The global snack bar market is forecasted to expand at a 5.4 percent compound annual growth rate from 2019 to 2024, according to Reportbuyer, a research firm, with granola and muesli bars being the most popular cereal bars.

The Avalanche products are available nationwide at Vistar and United Natural Foods Inc. The order minimum is one pallet.

In addition to International Marketing Systems’ direct sales force, West Coast Concepts brokers the product on the West Coast.

International Marketing Systems’ key focus in convenience services for Avalanche granola bars is on micro markets as well as pantry services, Reff said.
